Newest SNL Castmember Already Well-Versed in Political Humor - Political News

Original Article

Meet Michaela Watkins, newest member of the SNL troupe, doing her Arianna impression. And ha! It's pretty good. Especially how she incorporated her dorm room or whatever into her audition tape.

But if Lorne Michaels was going the political route for the rest of the season and trying to keep cashing in on the post-election viewership, why not hire a guy who looks reasonably like Obama? Not that there is anything wrong with Fred Armisen, but he just plays it so straight, and it brings up that issue of how do you make fun of a guy who represents real change and hope for our country? Blah bah. You guys know what I'm talking about.

But hey, at least Michaela will make a good Michelle Obama? And her Arianna is still way better than Tracy Ullman's.

The Obama women have arrived in D.C - Democratic Source.

Original Article

Via the Washington Post, we learn that three of our city’s newest residents have arrived:

Future first lady and her two daughters slipped into Washington last night, flying in from Chicago a day earlier than expected and checking into their new, temporary home at the posh Hay-Adams Hotel.

The departure allowed the family a little extra time to get situated before Malia and Sasha Obama begin classes tomorrow at their new school, Sidwell Friends.

President-elect is scheduled to move today to the nation’s capital from his home town of Chicago.

It was the start of classes after winter break at Sidwell that drove the Obamas’ plans to arrive in D.C. weeks before inauguration and the family’s official move into the . The family had requested to stay at Blair House, a guest house on Lafayette Park where presidents-elect normally stay ahead of their inauguration. But the declined, saying the building was already booked “by officials, the State Department and its Office of Protocol for various events.”

I still don’t understand what “various events” were so damn important at Blair House.

The president-elect arrives in D.C tonight.

Michelle Obama: Burgeoning Fashion Icon - Democratic Source

Original Article

As we see more and more of Michelle Obama, it's going to get very tiring for the world to stop every time she changes her clothes. For now, though, it's fun that people care so much. The dress she wore to her meeting with ol' George and Laura? It was a design by Maria Pinto, who seems pretty excited about the whole thing.

A Double O Moment: Oprah And Obama Together In D.c.

Original Article

Shortly before the Nov. 4 presidential election, talk-show diva and noted Obama-backer Oprah Winfrey announced that she’d already picked out her inaugural ball gown, a sign of overconfidence that she did not have to pay for in the end.

Now that Barack Obama’s inauguration is virtually certain (unless the Supreme Court’s ponderings lead it to get involved), Oprah has announced she’s taking her Chicago talk show to WOprah had Barack and Michelle Obama on her nationally syndicated TV show which she's taking to Washington for the inauguralashington, which is also famous for lotsa talk. (And that’ll allow her to write off the gown cost as a business expense.)

She’s rented the 2,300-seat Kennedy Center to do two shows there right around Jan. 20.

You may remember Oprah came out early for her fellow Chicagoan. She held a huge celebrity fundraiser for him at her Montecito house.

And she emceed giant primary rallies for him in Iowa and North Carolina, which he won, and New Hampshire, which he lost to Hillary Clinton, the first serious female presidential candidate who many former Oprah fans thought she should support. Winfrey’s ratings took a hit.

We don’t want to let anything out of the bag and spoil the screaming.

But wouldn’t it just be a perfect television moment if, while Oprah is talking to the excited Kennedy Center audience in January, a certain someone who’s about to become president and maybe his wife too walked out on the stage behind the show host?

Everyone would cry, except those execs watching the ratings.

Someone has to pay attention to this crap - Democratic Source

    Original Article

Voting in The Soggy Biscuit sweepstakes — dedicated to anointing the “biggest circle-jerk of the year” — is now open.

I’ll admit to having something of a soft spot for the African Press International scam. The fact that these folks are still at it — and are now requiring that anyone who wants to read their coverage ask for a password from the editor — is worthy of admiration and underscores the resiliency of their devoted American readers. That said, the API thing was really just an opportunistic subset of the “Whitey Tape” fiasco, which strangely enough didn’t make the list. If it had, this year’s contest would be a no-brainer.

I’d also be tempted to vote for the “Fake Obama Birth Certificate” story, which EvenTheDerangedWingnut Bob Owens dismissed. It’s a sensible choice, and I suspect it will eventually carry the title Let’s be honest, though. Any circle jerk that doesn’t include Confederate Yankee isn’t really worthy of the name. For that reason alone, my vote will go to “Bill Ayers Ghost Wrote Obama’s Book,” a rumor that Owens entertained and for which a couple of idiot Republicans were willing to waste $10,000.

Slate’s Political Gabfest: Illustrating Black Women - Today in Politics

    Original Article

Slate’s Political Gabfest is usually Emily Bazelon, David Plotz, and John Dickerson talking politics. Occassionally Hanna Rosin, who happens to be David Plotz’s wife, joins the crew.

The December 5, 2008, show was the usual back and forth, intellectual discussion until the 29:00 mark where Hanna sticks her foot in her mouth. I had to listen three times just to be sure:

David Plotz: There was a great item… that Julia Turner (Slate’s The XX Factor Columnist) wrote about Michelle Obama…It was Women’s Wear Daily did a, um,… asked a bunch of designers to design dresses for and so they published all the illustrations…and what Julia pointed out is that in the illustrations doesn’t look Black and the difficulty of portraying her as Black.

Emily Bazelon: Or maybe it’s not so difficult and they just didn’t do it…

Hanna Rosin: You have to look. It’s not merely that she doesn’t look Black because in some of them she looks very Black but she looks totally like E.T. or something. It’s just like it’s just the difficulty that they have in drawing a plausible, attractive, normal looking Black woman…

Here’s the slideshow of dresses so you can see for yourself.

This exchange is worth mentioning so we can be sensitive to the issue and proponents of positive change. For too long magazines, illustrations, advertisements, and etc. have included only one skin color.

Hopefully major illustrators will soon learn how to include Black women. Hopefully we’ll see Whites, Latinos, Blacks, and more all on the same T.V. show. Hopefully we’ll see advertisements with several skin types all in one setting.

Yes We Can. And let’s leave E.T. out of it.

Kent Brownridge Got a Good Thing Going with OK!, Why Continue to Publish - Cited by Sharpy News?

    Original Article

The last three issues of OK! magazine are going to be double-issued, says gossip mogul and magazine chief Kent Brownridge:

"With the exception of People, which had two phenomenal issues in the fourth quarter, all of the other celeb rity weeklies are down."

"There are three weeks where the schedule gets messed up with the wholesalers - Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's. I just said, freak it, I'm publishing double issues instead.

Sure sure, it's a wholesaler problem, and not the fact that the Thanksgiving issue of OK! with Michelle Obama underperformed.

Wait, wasn't this the same Kent Brownridge that said his mag was the only one still hiring last month? This is what happens when you stop promising baby pictures, folks. Or maybe it's because they want to have extra time to copyedit for another Ashlee/Ashley Simpson mistake?
